Day 1 SPIRIT OF THE OUTBACK

Welcome to our tour to Longreach, featuring the iconic Spirit of the Outback! This afternoon we board the coach and make our way to Brisbane Airport for our direct afternoon flight to Longreach with QantasLink. We arrive at Longreach later this afternoon and settle into our accommodation for the next four nights.

Lunch own expense | Dinner at The Woolshed Restaurant

We start our day with a visit to the School of Distance Education—a classroom more than twice the size of Victoria, where the playground is as vast as the outback, and the partnership between home and school is legendary. Next, we continue our adventure at the iconic Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame to experience the Outback Stockman’s Show. This show highlights the modern-day aspects of being a stockman, as well as tales from the past.

In the afternoon, we visit the renowned Qantas Founders Outback Museum. Historic photographs, memorabilia, and multimedia interactive displays eloquently tell the inspirational stories of overcoming the challenges of long-distance travel in Outback Australia. A Boeing 747-200, donated by Qantas Airways Ltd, forms a spectacular part of the museum’s outdoor display.

Breakfast at The Birdcage Hotel | Lunch at The Drovers Place | Dinner at The Woolshed Restaurant

Today we journey to Winton, where we are surrounded by dramatic and ever-changing scenery. The area was once home to dinosaurs and is renowned for groundbreaking scientific discoveries and archaeological digs. At the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, we’ll learn about this prehistoric phenomenon. The centre hosts the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils and the largest fossil preparation laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere. We enjoy morning tea and a tour here before heading into the township.

In Winton, we visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre, the only museum in the world dedicated to a song. It was in Winton that Banjo Paterson wrote his famous poem about the swagman and jumbuck, and ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was first performed in the North Gregory Hotel. On arrival at the Waltzing Matilda Centre, we are greeted with lunch before having time to explore the exhibits. Later this afternoon, we return to Longreach after an insightful and engaging day.

Breakfast at The Birdcage Hotel | Lunch at Waltzing Matilda Centre | Dinner at The Woolshed Restaurant

This morning, we head out for a special experience as we gain insight into the area through the eyes of local graziers and pioneer families. At Rosebank Station, we meet the owners and learn about their operations while enjoying a delicious morning tea.

Next, we step back in time at Kinnon & Co in the main street of town. The Station Store boasts a range of traditionally made leatherwear and a treasure trove of historic nostalgia. While here, we enjoy the delightful Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show, a mix of Australian humour and poetic storytelling that brings the legend of Harry Redford, or “Captain Starlight,” to life. During the show, we savour our Billy Can lunch.

The day concludes with a sunset cruise along the majestic Thompson River. As the sunset fades into starlight, we dock at Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show for a night of delicious food and live entertainment under the stars.

Breakfast at The Birdcage Hotel | Lunch at Kinnon & Co | Dinner at Smithy’s

We have an early breakfast and make our way to the Longreach Railway Station, where we depart on the Spirit of the Outback train. From the comfort of our seat, we watch as the scenery morphs into rugged terrain during the 1,300 km journey from Longreach to Brisbane. The train offers a unique insight into the history and culture of early Australia, combined with interesting commentary, a social atmosphere, and an authentic dining experience. The daylight journey allows us to enjoy the magical colours and landscape of Outback Queensland. The train snakes its way across the top of the Drummond Range whilst darkness falls.

Waking to the clickety-clack of our train travelling along the coast, we enjoy breakfast onboard the train before our journey concludes at Nambour after a sensational tour of Outback Queensland.
