      Day 1 HOME TO ROCKHAMPTON

      Welcome to our 5-day Rockhampton tour! Today, we sit back, relax, and meet your fellow travellers as we head north through Gympie and Childers. We stop for convenience along the way before arriving in Rockhampton later this afternoon. We check into our accommodation upon arrival, with time to settle in before our first dinner together on tour.

      We step back in time this morning at the award-winning Rockhampton Heritage Village. Enjoy morning tea and experience the rich and colourful history of the district by vintage vehicle. There are unique original buildings, homesteads, and businesses from the 100 years between 1850 and 1950.

      Today’s lunch is at The Criterion Hotel before we venture to the Botanic Gardens. Wander the towering fig trees or sit by the peaceful ponds dotted with lily pads and swaying reeds. Also located in the gardens is the Rockhampton Zoo, where we can discover more than 60 species of native and exotic animals.

      This afternoon, we take in some magnificent views of Rockhampton and the Fitzroy River as we visit the Nurim Circuit Elevated Boardwalk at Mount Archer

      Today, we head to the coast and board the Freedom Fast Cat for an incredible cruise. Our cruise will take us to the spectacular Great Keppel Island, located at the Southern Great Barrier Reef, near the Tropic of Capricorn.

      Boasting some of the most pristine beaches and unspoilt habitats the reef has to offer, this will be a highlight of our tour. After morning tea upon arrival on the island, we depart on a glass-bottom boat for a coral viewing cruise. Be captivated by sea creatures that pass beneath our feet. The informative crew will provide expert commentary about the history behind the island and the surrounding marine life. We finish the day exploring the island village, browsing for souvenirs or simply relaxing on the white beach.

      We return to Rockhampton this afternoon via Emu Park to see the Singing Ship, a majestic monument that commemorates the area’s legacy of the historical explorations of Captain James Cook.

      Heading out of town, we are in for a geological delight today. Feel the excitement of venturing into an ancient coral reef cave as we head into the Capricorn Caves. Be guided through the easily accessible Cathedral Cave, which will leave lasting memories of the ancient geological past, early explorers, the wonders of wildlife and special cave acoustics. After an interesting morning, we head back to Rockhampton, where we have time to purchase lunch (own expense)

      This afternoon, we will discover the railway history of the region at the Archer Park Rail Museum. Built in the 1890s, the museum boasts its true heritage with its renovated classic trains. Featuring a restored Purrey Steam Tram and incorporating parts of one of the original nine tramcars and six trailers that operated in Rockhampton from 1909 to 1939.

      We farewell our hosts today and begin our travel home. We arrive home this afternoon after a wonderful tour to Rockhampton.
