7-Day Adelaide & The Overland Train Experience with Barossa Wine and Coastal Touring | 2nd – 8th May 2026

This morning will be all about exploring Adelaide. The city’s Central Business District is surrounded by Parklands, or the Green Belt as it’s known. For an excellent overview of the city and its Parklands, we make a stop at Montefiore Hill. It was from this spot that Colonel Light planned a great city of the future in the sweeping valley below. Easily seen from the Hill is Adelaide Oval, one of the most beautiful Cricket Ovals in the world. Another landmark close by is St Peter’s Cathedral, which overlooks the city from North Adelaide.

We have some free time to look through Rundle Mall, which is Adelaide’s main shopping precinct and has numerous cafes, restaurants and eateries open for us to purchase lunch.

The remainder of the afternoon will be at your choice. You may like to take in the beauty and diversity of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens or see the giant pandas at the Adelaide Zoo.

Today we head for the Adelaide Hills, our first stop being Mt Lofty Summit Lookout for picturesque views over the city and surrounding areas. After our photo opportunity, we continue up the highway, reaching the historical German town of Hahndorf, where we visit Beerenberg Strawberry Farm. We will be introduced to the sixth-generation farm that specialises in chutneys, jams, sauces, and gourmet relishes and be served a delicious morning tea.

Lunch today has been arranged at the charming German Arms Hotel, before a bit of free time to stroll the charming main street. Lined with eating houses, attractions, and galleries housed in authentic surroundings, there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Departing Hahndorf, we make our way to Woodside Cheese Wrights, who produce an original range of handmade cheeses for us to taste. We then wander next door to Melba’s Chocolate and Confectionery Factory, where we watch artisans in action as they make their delicious treats! After our purchases, we depart The Hills and make our way back to Adelaide.

Our touring today takes us to the renowned wine-producing region, the Barossa Valley. We make our way to the iconic Seppeltsfield Winery, established in 1851. The history of this winery and its owners is truly fascinating, which we will hear about on our tour, after which we will enjoy a tasting. Onsite is also the beautiful Jam Factory with artisans’ workshops and bespoke retail outlets, and Vasse Virgin, producers of all-natural handmade skin and body care products.

Our next stop is the Barossa Chateau. This is a baroque-style chateau surrounded by 30,000 roses and filled with one of the world’s great collections of Meissen porcelain, antique furniture, tapestries, and paintings. We enjoy a guided tour around the gallery, followed by an elegant High Tea at the Chateau. There will also be time for a wander around the rose garden and to look around the great gift shop.

Next, we enjoy a wine tasting at Jacobs Creek Visitor Centre, where, back in 1847, a young Bavarian immigrant, Johann Gramp, planted the valley’s first commercial vineyard on the banks of Jacobs Creek. After a great day exploring the Barossa, we return to Adelaide for dinner at the hotel.

Following breakfast, we travel to the historic town of Strathalbyn. Over the past three decades, Strathalbyn has built a reputation as a home of exceptional antique shops, antiques markets, and places where collectables can be purchased.

We stop to enjoy morning tea off the coach at the Soldiers Memorial Gardens. It’s now time to sit back and relax as our journey takes us via Currency Creek, Middleton, and Port Elliot through to the laidback seaside village of Victor Harbor.

After a brief sightseeing tour and a chance to stretch our legs along the foreshore, we enjoy lunch at the Causeway Café. It’s aboard the Cockle Train now for the one-way journey along the coast to Goolwa.

The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel-rail railway in Australia, dating back to 1854 when it was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharves at Pt Elliot and later at “Victor” as the locals call it. In the early days of settlement, the local residents would take a horse-drawn train to Goolwa to collect Cockles from the sandy beaches near the Murray mouth. It was a great day’s outing and thus gained its name.

After a fabulous afternoon exploring the coast, we meander our way back to Adelaide.

We farewell our hosts this morning and make our way to the Adelaide Parklands Terminal and board The Overland for our journey to Melbourne. Sit back and relax, breakfast and lunch will be served to us, as we enjoy the views from our comfy seats in the Red Premium Service Carriage.

We arrive at Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station this evening and are transferred to our nearby overnight accommodation.

After enjoying our last breakfast on tour, we transfer to Melbourne airport to board our flight home. We arrive home this afternoon after a wonderful South Australian experience.
